Our laboratory is working on the topic of speech perception by normal and hearing-impaired listeners. This work also involves basic psychophysical capabilities of normal and impaired listeners. in addition to the theoretical contributions of this work, we also see applications in the design of hearing aids and cochlear implants. In recent years we have participated in the development of a new device, the "short- electrode" cochlear implant, which uses electrical stimulation to replace only the high frequency portion of the speech spectrum, allowing the patient to use their residual acoustic hearing which remains in the lower frequencies. We have also participated in fMRI studies of the human auditory cortex.
