Research Summary

Cardiovascular regulation by the CNS. pharmacology, neuroanatomy, immunohistochemistry, physiology, baroreflex, dominant negative, neurotransmitter, cerebral blood flow, neurogenic hypertension, glutamate, nitric oxide, cardiovascular Our laboratory research focuses on central cardiovascular and circulatory control. We study the role played by excitatory amino acids and nitric oxide as possible neurotransmitters in central cardiovascular reflex signal transduction. Current studies investigate the link between activation of excitatory amino acid receptors and release of nitric oxide in specific nuclei of the brain stem. In separate studies we investigate the role played by arterial baroreceptor reflexes in cerebrovascular control. Those studies focus on the role played by nitroxidergic parasympathetic nerves in cerebrovascular control and on the preganglionic central pathways that regulate those nerves.
