The changes in the heart that occur during cardiovascular disease result in part from altered gene expression patterns. The Mediator protein complex serves to bridge transcription factors such as nuclear hormone receptors to RNA polymerase II at specific genes to regulate their expression. We hypothesize that Mediator determines global cardiac gene expression under normal and disease states. Our research is focused on the kinase associated with Mediator, Cdk8, and how its activity may be critical in promoting heart disease.
