Surgical Pathology Service

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory provides surgical pathology service to veterinarians and veterinary hospitals. The surgical pathology service is directed by an ACVP boarded veterinary pathologist with a goal of providing excellent service to client veterinarians.

Submitted samples are processed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned onto a glass slide, stained (H&E) and examined by a pathologist with a written report of the findings faxed to the referring DVM.

Rates
The fee structure for veterinarians submitting biopsy or tissue samples is based on the number of slides processed (as determined by the pathologist for sufficient diagnostic interpretation) and number of lesions/organs submitted for the pathologist. Each tissue lesion will conventionally generate one slide unless multiple slides are required to make a single diagnosis (e.g. multiple biopsies of skin disorder) or functional assessment of tumor clearance. Immunohistochemistry or special stains may be recommended to the veterinarian for more a specific diagnosis at an additional charge. Examples of case submission charges are seen below.

Tissues per patient Resulting sections
(as determined by pathologist)
Price
Solitary lesion One slide $41.60
Solitary lesion Two slides $55.05
Solitary lesion Four slides $81.95
Multiple lesions/organs Four slides $83.20
Multiple lesions/organs Six slides $110.10
Multiple lesions/organs Eight slides $137.00

Submission
Surgical pathology samples should be submitted in sealed (e.g. use tape to seal the lid to the jar) wide-mouthed plastic containers that are labeled and contain 10-20 volumes of 10% neutral buffered formalin. Samples should be no thicker than about 0.5 cm for best fixation. Large masses may need to be “bread-loaf” cut to allow adequate fixative penetration. The tissue should be double-sealed in two plastic bags to prevent leakage during transit. Fill out the Surgical Pathology Requisition, attach it to the outside of the sealed plastic bag and send to:
