About the UI Carver College of Medicine

One of the nation’s major medical schools, the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) currently enrolls 562 medical students and over 180 allied health students.  The college has more than 800 faculty and almost 1052  residents, fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students in various training programs.  It has a well-established Medical Scientist Training Program for combined M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical science, provides support to the Statewide Family Practice Training Program, and conducts a vital continuing medical education program.  The college also ranks first in academic environment, according to Academic Environment, a Handbook for Evaluating Faculty Employment Opportunities.

The CCOM’s budget is $500 million, including the UI Physicians revenue.  In fiscal year 2005, the college obtained $137 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research awards, placing it 13th among public medical schools in NIH awards.  Since 1996, NIH award funding for the CCOM has grown by 110 percent.  The college has received over $1 billion in external funding since 1996.

Basic medical science departments serve the entire University, providing instruction for students in the other four UI health colleges (Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health).  These colleges also serve more than 3,000 undergraduate students (largely from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), and provide graduate work through the doctoral level for science students from all parts of the University.
