Instruction in the safe use of the core facility, facility instrumentation and supervision of laboratory studies is available.
All researchers are trained in BSL-3 and ABSL-3 techniques by faculty director Bradley Jones, PhD or associate director, Dana Ries. Jones has over 25 years of research experience and has received BSL-3 and ABSL-3 training through the University of Texas Medical Branch Animal Laboratory Biosafety Level 3 Training Program. Ries has over 25 years of research experience, has managed and worked within the Carver College of Medicine BSL3 Laboratories for several years and has attended many professional biological safety conferences. She is a graduate of the Southeast Regional Center of Excellence for Emerging Infections and Biodefense, BSL-3 Science and Safety Training Program.Following training and certification, approved investigators are allowed to schedule time in the laboratory online through the scheduling link at left. To begin the certification process, contact Dana Ries.University of Iowa researchers are charged $10.50 per entry for use of the laboratory plus $50.00 per hour for use of lab bench space. Use of the ABSL-3 laboratory is an additional charge. Training is provided free of charge to investigators.
We request on behalf of the Dean of the College of Medicine that all scientific publications which include data collected at the BSL3 Laboratory Core Facility include the following statement in the acknowledgement section: "The data presented herein were obtained at the Carver College of Medicine BSL3 Laboratory Core Facility at the University of Iowa directed by Bradley Jones, Ph.D. The Core Facility is supported in part by user fees and the generous support of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine."
