Description and preparation:
There are times when building level staff and Area Education Agency team
members including the parent are still asking questions relative to
appropriate programming and services for an individual. Building staff serving
children and youth with autism spectrum disorders cannot be expected to have a
specific expertise in the area of autism to respond to all concerns that may
develop. The local AEA Autism Resource Team, trained in autism issues and
programming, may be called upon to provide consultation and other services to
meet the needs of those planning for the instructional program to meet the
needs of the individual with autism spectrum disorders. There are times when
this Autism Resource Team, building level staff, or the parents request
additional collaboration with the state consultant in Regional Autism Services
Program. To request this outside consultation please follow the steps below:
1. Share specific programming questions (5) from the building level team
and parents of an individual with autism spectrum disorders with (Autism
Resource Team and/or) Autism Services Program.
2. Provide specific individual’s IEP and pertinent background information
from records with appropriate releases, and, if needed, share a short video
tape sampling of current curriculum, management, skill level, etc. in use.
3. Autism Services Consultant will schedule an ICN event to connect local
school people (including pertinent AEA and Autism Resource Team staff) to
discuss solution focused strategies addressing the specific programming
questions. The local school or AEA team will need to secure approval to
reimburse ICN transmission ($8.10/hour) and room fees (up to $12.50/hour) for
this activity.
Consultation received: General suggestions, background information, and
resource links are often content requested to respond to programming questions
during the ICN time. Follow-up feedback to all team members present will be solicited in written form approximately two months after the ICN event.
