For Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders
The Regional Autism Services Program, a
cooperative effort of Iowa Department of Education, University of Iowa’s
Division of Child Psychiatry and Child Health Specialty Clinic, announces a new
category of resources in their lending library. These resources are on loan (for
the cost of one way UPS charges) to support educational intervention for those
with autism and related disorders. This new resource category is Very
Young Children’s Interactive Literature Books.
Very
Young Children’s Interactive Literature books are a variety of children’s
books appropriate for ages 2-5 years. They are typical book titles of
interest to children this age. They have velcro-backed pictures the child can
manipulate and match to the illustrations according to the story line. This
way the children can focus on matching pictures, often their strength at this
age, as they learn language.
There are many pictures included with each story
book, all secured to a hard plastic sheet ready for the child to match into the
book, which has the receiving piece of velcro. These require supervision
with children this young. Attention to mounting the pictures back onto the
plastic sheet will help avoid lost pictures when these materials are returned
back to the Autism Services Program. These are not available commercially, but
many readers have chosen to duplicate the interactive nature of these books, by
purchasing two copies of the child’s favorite books, arming themselves with
plenty of velcro, and planfully choosing important language concepts to
represent with a picture to match the illustrations.
