UI’s top-ranked otolaryngology program is one of the most comprehensive in the world. Bruce Gantz, MD, professor and head, is an international leader in advancing cochlear implant technology to the benefit of patients like Glenna Penny of Newton, Iowa.
Changing Medicine
through Research
From the most basic look at the inner workings of cells to improving the delivery of patient care, the researchers at University of Iowa Health Care are advancing the science of saving lives.
Our scientists and clinicians are working together in a strengthened research enterprise that is home to numerous well-recognized scientists who have received multiple honors. UI Carver College of Medicine faculty are some of the most productive in the nation, ranking fifth among the nation’s public medical schools in the number and amount of grants awarded per faculty member.
The Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health is a reflection of both our past accomplishments in research and our high potential for future discoveries. The five-year, $33.8 million award supports the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, which is focused on expanding “bench to bedside” research. The University of Iowa was one of the first 24 in the country to receive this prestigious award.
The Clinical and Translational Science Award is facilitating multi-disciplinary collaboration across the University, among academic partners in the Midwest and with other researchers, including those in private industry ranging from structural biologists to engineers to pharmaceutical researchers. Short-term goals include developing highly individualized, interactive databases for researchers; informing the lay public about advances in research; and establishing a network of providers to help conduct clinical trials, bringing new treatments to patients. Relationships with Iowa State University and the University of Arizona will foster new research collaborations and help develop a diverse pool of eligible volunteers for clinical trials.
