From the Dean
Ui Carver College of Medicine
The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is proud to be a part of University of Iowa Health Care. As the newly appointed dean and former department executive officer of the UI Department of Internal Medicine, I am delighted to report on our progress toward becoming one of our nation’s finest medical schools and a model for innovative, interdisciplinary medical education.
Each year, our applications are more competitive and our entering students better qualified than even their immediate predecessors. We are committed to a college that is both richly diverse as well as strongly rooted in education for Iowa students. We are determined to provide not only the scientific knowledge today’s physicians need but also to inculcate in our students the humanistic life skills they will need to become well-rounded, empathetic practicing physicians.
At the UI Carver College of Medicine, we are committed to groundbreaking research and a richly diverse educational experience.
We are developing students’ sensitivities and skills through our patient simulation models, where “practice patients” undergo examinations and provide feedback about the encounter as part of the learning experience. Our students are also encouraged to develop their talents for unique self-expression through art, participation in the Writers’ Workshop, and other similar opportunities.
We recognize that medical school is challenging, so students are assigned to one of four learning communities. This helps them connect with students at all stages of the curriculum, with faculty and staff, and with the broader, local community.
The College’s research enterprise continues to grow in size and scope. Our faculty members are pushing the boundaries of knowledge in research ranging from the sub-cellular level to behavioral studies of entire populations. They all share the singular goal of seeking to change the ways in which our understanding of medicine is expanded, taught, and delivered. The College’s faculty members teach nearly 2,000 medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy students, as well as almost 700 residents and fellow physicians and dentists in training.
For more than 100 years, The University of Iowa has been home to one of the world’s greatest academic medical centers. Working together, UI Health Care trains the next generation of global leaders in patient care, medical research, and education.
