1930's
J.L. Ehrenhaft ('38 MD, '48 R surgery)
is a UI professor emeritus of surgery, having retired in 1986 after serving
nearly 40 years as chairman of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
1940's
MD Classes of 1943 and 1948 mark your calendars for Alumni Reunion

Warren R. Moore (’48 MD), of Traverse
City, Mich., reports his son is a physician at the University of
Michigan and a grandson is a pre-med student.
1950's

Jim K. Wise (’53 MD, ’55
R), of Fort Collins, Colo., has retired, and now he and his wife,
Julie,
enjoy activities with their six children and 12 grandchildren, many of
which live nearby.
William E. Erkonen (’55 BA, ’58 MD, ’71 R),
of Coralville, Iowa, associate professor emeritus of
radiology, has twice given the UI Carver College of Medicine commencement
address, and has been cited numerous times for outstanding teaching. The
second edition of the textbook he co-authored, Radiology 101, came out
in 2005.
Stanley D. Mills (’58 MD, ’66 R), of Crossnore,
N.C., retired in 1998 but stays active in his church,
volunteering at the hospital, researching family genealogy and participating
in the Barbershop
Harmony Society and the American Association of Woodturners. He has three
children: a son in San Diego who teaches college chemistry; another son
in New York, working in biomedical engineering; and a daughter in North
Carolina.

Samuel D. Bovenmyer (’60 BA, ’63
MD, ’67 R), of Waterloo, Iowa, retired in 2001 after 31
years
practicing ophthalmology.
Larry L. Erickson (’61 BA, ’63 MD, ’69 R) is
chief of the ob-gyn department at Memorial Medical
Center in Modesto, Calif., and maintains a fulltime practice. He has enjoyed
traveling to Oregon
and Italy, and visiting grandchildren in San Diego.
Jerry N. Ringer (’63 MD, ’70 R), of Bloomington,
Ill., retired in 2003 from practicing ophthalmology.
Ben H. Knecht (’64 MD, ’72 R), of Wenatchee,
Wash., retired as medical director from Wenatchee
Valley Medical Center after 34 years of practice as a surgeon.
Anthony G. Pappas (’68 MD) practices diagnostic
radiology in Salem, Ore.
Jerry Smith (’68 MD) is part of a 24-physician
family practice group in Fort Collins, Colo. He was
named 2003 Colorado Family Physician of the Year.

Nancy Coover Andreasen (’70 MD),
the Andrew H. Woods Chair of Psychiatry and professor of
psychiatry at the UI Carver College of Medicine, received the American
Psychiatric Association’s
Judd Marmor Award for her contributions to research on mental disorders.

Laura Kragie (’83 MD, ’84
R), of Chevy Chase, Md., is vice president of clinical development
and chief medical officer for Emisphere Technologies, a biopharmaceutical
company in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Deanna Boesen (’85 MD, ’90 F) is director
of child and adolescent psychiatry in the Medicine and
Addiction Department at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.
Paul Arnold (’85 R) and his wife, Priscilla, both
ophthalmologists, recently joined Sneed Eye
Associates in Mountain Home, Ark. Previously he was in private practice
in Springfield, Mo. He
earned the David J. McIntyre Award 2007 from the Outpatient Ophthalmic
Surgery Society.
David A. Lewis (’85 R) is professor of psychiatry
and neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as director
of the Translational Neuroscience Program and professor of translational
neuroscience. The 1,500-member Institute of Medicine selected him as a
new member for his
work advancing schizophrenia treatment.
William Platz (’88 MD) has joined the River Falls
(Wis.) Medical Clinic as a psychiatrist. Previously
he worked at Regions Hospital in the Twin Cities.
Tracy A. Powell (’84 BA, ’88 MD) practices
emergency medicine at Buffalo (Minn.) Hospital
and lives in St. Cloud with his wife, Jeannie, and sons, Josiah, a pre-med
student at St. Olaf College, and Jacob. Tracy encourages all ’88
grads to attend Homecoming Reunion Weekend in September.

Ross Bacon (’90 MD, ’93
R, ’96 F) is medical director of critical care at Mercy
Medical Center-Sioux City (Iowa). Previously he was in practice with Pulmonary
Associates.
Michael A. Flaum (’90 F) received a 2007 UI President’s
Award for State Outreach and Public
Engagement. He is an associate professor of psychiatry and executive director
of the Iowa
Consortium for Community Health Services, Training and Research.
David S. Resch (’92 R, ’92 F), associate
professor of medicine and psychiatry and acting chair
of medicine at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, received
the 2007 Leonard
Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
Ann Marie Machlab (’96 MD, ’00 R) is medical
director at Iowa City Hospice.
Jennifer Arter (’93 BS, ’98 MD) is a pediatrician
for the St. John’s Mercy Healthcare system and
sees patients at Bluefish Pediatrics Center in St. Louis. She and her
husband, Hays, live in
Chesterfield, Mo.
Dana Danley (’98 MD) is a family medicine physician
at Broadlawns Medical Center’s
Family Health Center in Des Moines.
Matthew Kettman (’99 MD)
is a physician with Evansdale (Iowa) Family Practice. He was named
a 20 Under 40 award recipient by the Cedar Valley Business Quarterly magazine,
which recognized
area residents under age 40 who are making a difference in their communities,
workplaces and
the organizations they support.
2000's
Kelby Bethards (’00 MD)
has been a racing cyclist “on and off” for 20 years, competing
in Category 3 and 35+ races. He is a team physician for two teams in Fort
Collins, Colo.,
where he is a family practice physician.
Jennifer Groos (’01 MD) is a pediatrician at Blank
Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.
Kenneth Staley (’04 MD) is director for biodefense
policy at the White House
Homeland Security Council. He oversees implementation of the National
Strategy for
Pandemic Influenza and coordinates the development of policies related
to biodefense
and the medical consequences of weapons of mass destruction.
Paul Row (’04 F) joined
the Eye Care Center of Napa Valley (Calif.) specializing
in refractive surgery, corneal disease and ocular surface reconstruction.
He lives in
the Bay Area with his wife and family and enjoys rock climbing, skiing
and cycling.
He has an interest in mission work, recently helping to build homes in
Indonesia after the
earthquake and tsunami of 2004.
