Achievement

Gail McGuinness, M.D. (75R, 77F-Pediatrics)

Is a nationally respected educator who has made significant contributions to medical education. For over 25 years she has been a key advocate of student and resident education, often ahead of the curve in implementing changes that several years later were advocated and even mandated on the national level. Now involved in the continuing education of pediatricians and in setting the standards for their evaluation, Gail is the Executive Vice President of the American Board of Pediatrics and resides in Chapel Hill, NC.

Fayez Ghishan, M.D. (79F-Pediatrics)

Is an international authority on developmental regulation of intestinal transport and has made a number of seminal observations that have formed the basis for our current understanding of fundamental aspects of intestinal function. Recognized for his life-long scientific and educational contributions to the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, Fayez is Professor and Head of Pediatrics and Chair of the Steele Children's Research Center at the University of Arizona and resides in Tucson, AZ.

Sandra Horning, M.D. (71BA, 75MD)

A native of Creston, Iowa, is internationally acknowledged as one of the most distinguished clinical investigators working in the field of oncology today. A constant advocate for evidence-based oncologic care, Dr. Horning has been the lead investigator for several of the pivotal clinical trials that validated current lymphoma treatment. Sandra has helped establish the standards of care for patients with virtually all classifications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is the past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is currently Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and resides in Portola Valley, CA.

Dennis Boatman, M.D. (62BA, 64MS, 66MD, 70R-Urology)

Originally from Centerville, Iowa, is a trusted advisor, influential philanthropist and a tireless advocate for Iowans and the University of Iowa. His extensive service leadership has helped guide numerous civic, education and community health interests to better serve his Iowa neighbors. Dr. Boatman’s leadership of the largest capital campaign in UI Carver College of Medicine history helped construct the new Medical Education Research Facility and create endowments to support medical education, medical research and medical student scholarships for generations to come. Dr. Boatman is currently retired and resides in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
