Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Admission Procedures
Class size is limited, and not all applicants are selected for admission to the program. Applications and all required documentation must be submitted to the program office by February 1 for consideration for the program beginning the next fall session. Send to: Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Radiology Department C726GH, 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, Iowa 52242-1009. Applicants must provide:
- Application for admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.
- Official transcripts from high school and all post-secondary educational institutions.
- ACT or SAT scores. Often these scores are on high school transcripts. Inquire about this when contacting your high school. If scores are not on high school transcript, contact ACT or SAT to have official scores sent. The ACT and SAT score submission requirement is waived if the student has completed over 24 semester hours of postsecondary general education coursework with a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average at a United States institution.
- Three standardized personal reference forms. Personal letters of reference are not accepted.
- Verification of Patient Care Experience form required for all applicants without an allied health education background.
- Completion of the Self Disclosure of Criminal Background form.
- Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited and must present themselves in person for an interview with the program Admissions Committee. Not all who apply for admission are invited for an interview. The program will schedule this interview.
Fulfillment of the basic requirements does not guarantee admission. The Admissions Committee selects the applicants it considers best qualified for the study and practice of sonography from the pool of applicants who are interviewed. Student selection is made by the Admissions Committee based on course work, grade-point average, ACT/SAT scores, math and science courses completed, communication skills, healthcare experience, observation of sonographic procedures, references and personal interviews. Communication skills are demonstrated through a personal essay written by each applicant, as well as the personal interview. Preference is given to residents of Iowa. Eight to ten students are selected for admission each year. All selected students must consent to an external background check.
