Advising

Pre-radiation science majors completing the General Education Program before admission to the Radiologic Technology program are advised at the University's Academic Advising Center. The Radiologic Technology Program director advises students admitted to the Radiologic Technology Program. Radiation Sciences majors are advised by the Radiation Sciences personnel.

Admission Requirements

Year 1:  College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Radiation Sciences Interest
Students who intend to complete the entire baccalaureate program at Iowa should apply for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a 'radiation sciences interest’ and meet the admission requirements.  See "Admission" in the Learning at Iowa section of the General Catalog.  Students already enrolled at the University of Iowa, who are interested in the program, can declare a ‘radiation sciences interest’ as a major.

Years 2 & 3:  Radiologic Technology Program
Admission is a competitive selection process; enrollment is limited. Apply in October through December.  Consult the Radiologic Technology tab on this website for more information and deadlines.   Accepted students are admitted to the College of Medicine as a non-degree student.   Healthcare experience and job shadowing are highly recommended.

Year 4:  Carver College of Medicine, Radiation Sciences
Applicants to the Carver College of Medicine Radiation Sciences major must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete a Radiologic Technology program and provide evidence of American Registry of Radiologic Technology national certification.
  2. Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 for previous college course work. (Radiologic technology course grades are not included in the GPA.)
  3. Admission to the major does not guarantee admission to a modality program.
  4. Admission to a modality program does not guarantee admission to the major.
  5. Admission to modality programs varies.  Consult the website links to specific programs.  The following programs require an application/selection process for limited enrollment: sonography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and optional internships with CI, VI, CT, and MRI. The application deadline for modality programs and optional internships is FEBRUARY 1.

Transfer Students

Transfer Credits

The general and advanced university courses are courses that may transfer from other academic institutions. Once you admit to UI, you will receive a degree audit that will indicate which courses transferred and which requirements need to be fulfilled in order to meet all degree requirements. In order to assess which courses transfer and view a degree audit example, you can access the University of Iowa "Transfer Course Equivalency Guide" and the “I-Chart Transfer Planning Resource” at:  http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/transfer/planning.html . Courses that do not fulfill the specific degree requirements will count as elective credits.  For questions regarding transfer credits and courses, call the UI Admissions counselors at 800-553-4692.

Previously admitted University of Iowa degree students can request a ‘What If’ degree audit through the Student Records tab on ISIS, to show which degree requirements need to be fulfilled. Scroll to the bottom of the dropdown menu and select the Carver College of Medicine Radiation Science requirements.

The RT program may be completed at another institution. An admitted radiation sciences degree seeking student is issued 60 semester hours of credit with proof of passing the national ARRT boards.

A modality program must be completed at the University of Iowa for the BSRS degree. Except for the online modality programs, the RT, modality, and optional internships are separate programs that require an application, interview, and acceptance to each. There is no guarantee for admission to either the RT or a modality program. A student applies to the Carver College of Medicine Undergraduate Radiation Sciences major upon completion or near completion of the Radiologic Technology program.

Admission

  1. Meet the admissions requirements and apply for admission to the undergraduate Radiation Sciences major in the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) by the deadline.
  2. Attend a UI and Radiation Sciences orientation session (scheduled through admissions.)  Early sessions are encouraged.
  3. Call the Radiation Sciences office.

Meeting the UI Residency Requirement

    • Residency begins once a student is admitted to the Radiation Sciences major in the CCOM.
    • All students need to meet one of three residency options.
      • Option 1: At least 90 sh. must be completed in the UI CCOM.
      • Option 2: Forty-five of the final 60 sh. must be completed in the UI CCOM.
      • Option 3: The final consecutive 30 sh. must be completed in the UI CCOM.
      Interpretation:
      • Option 1: usually not an option for transfer students
      • Option 2: once admitted, a student would need to take minimum of 45 sh at UI and a maximum of 15 sh at another institution.
      • Option 3: once admitted, a student would need to complete a minimum of 30 sh--all at UI.  This is the most common option.  Complete all transfer courses prior to admitting to UI.
