You are NOT required to have the prerequisites completed prior to application or acceptance. All transfer coursework must be submitted to the UI Admissions office before January 15 to be considered in the application process.
Transfer Course Note: If you are completing courses outside of The University of Iowa, please include a printout of your Fall and Spring registration with your application. As soon as final grades are posted for these courses, be sure to have the official transcript(s) sent to the UI Admissions Office.
The following application requirements must be submitted BY THE APPLICANT as a single packet. Packets will be accepted from October 1 to January 15 for the class that begins the following Fall semester. Packets missing requirements or postmarked after January 15 will NOT be considered.
Choice of professional tracks: Rank order the tracks on the application after careful consideration as each track has limited positions: General & Vascular (8), and Cardiac & Vascular (4). The rank order is considered to be the applicant's final decision and candidates may not receive their first choice.Job-shadowing in diagnostic medical sonography is strongly recommended prior to application. Having a clear understanding of the tasks a sonographer performs is very important for understanding the career path. Job-shadows may be arranged at UI Healthcare.Health care experience is strongly recommended prior to application. Previous health care experience is regarded as one measure of the applicant’s interest in health care. In addition, such experiences offer a means by which the applicant can better understand the patient care role of the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and appreciate the relationship between health care providers. Health care experience can be gained through part-time and full-time employment or voluntary service. Hospitals, nursing homes, disability camps, and assisted living homes are just a few of the service areas that may offer such health care related opportunities. Interviews will be granted to approximately 30 candidates that are selected from the applicant pool. All invited interviewees will receive an interview invitation via e-mail before January 22.Acceptance decisions will be determined by March 1. Twelve (12) candidates will be accepted for Fall semester admittance.Admittance of accepted candidates is contingent on (1) completion of all prerequisite course work by the end of the spring semester, transcripts must be submitted to the UI Admissions office immediately following the spring semester, (If you cannot meet this deadline, please wait an additional year to apply.), (2) minimum of a 2.5 college GPA, and (3) passing of in- and out-of-state background checks.
