UI Health Science Research Week events April 16 and 17

Beginning April 16, 2013 the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) will host events to celebrate UI Health Sciences Research Week. Health Sciences Research Week is sponsored by the Carver College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and VA Health System. This year’s event will focus on the theme, “Molecules and Mental Illness."
Research week events will begin at noon in the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110 MERF) with a presentation from Kenneth S. Kendler of Virginia Commonwealth University entitled, “New Directions in the Genetic Epidemiology of Psychiatric Disorders.” Kendler is a Rachel Brown Banks Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, professor of human and molecular genetics and the director of the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. His research focuses primarily on the genetics of psychiatry and substance abuse disorders. This presentation will be followed by a poster session featuring Graduate, Medical and PharmD students from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the in the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF) Atrium.
Wednesday, April 17 will feature Andrew P. Feinberg of John Hopkins University at the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110 MERF) from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. presenting, “The Epigenetic Basis of Common Human Disease.” Director of the Center of Epigenetics, Feinberg’s laboratory studies the epigenetic basis of normal development and disease including cancer, aging and neuropsychiatric illness. Following Feinberg’s presentation will be another poster session in the MERF Atrium from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., this time for postdoctoral fellows, faculty and staff.
In the evening of April 17 H. Sebastian Seung a professor of computational neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be presenting, “Mapping the retinal connectome with EyeWire, an online communiy of ‘citizen scientists’” beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Coralville Marriott.
