U.S.News & World Report released its annual list of “The Best Hospitals in America” on July 17, 2012. Once again, The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is ranked in the top 10.
“We are pleased to be ranked among the best eye programs in the nation. Our high ranking is a reflection of our faculty and staff’s dedication to providing the finest care possible to each of our patients, excellence in ophthalmic training, and world-class vision research,” said Keith D. Carter, MD, professor and department head of the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
The UI Hospitals and Clinics is included in this widely-recognized group of the leading hospitals in the United States in many specialties. And, for the first time, the publication also ranked hospitals within each of the 50 states in the nation, and rated UI Hospitals and Clinics Number 1 in Iowa.
At UI Hospitals and Clinics, nine specialties are ranked overall in the nation.
- Cancer (#23)
- Gynecology (#41)
- Ophthalmology and visual sciences (#6)
- Orthopaedics and rehabilitation (#15)
- Otolaryngology (#10)
- Nephrology (#32)
- Neurology/neurosurgery (#24)
- Pulmonology (#42)
- Urology (#32)
In addition, five specialties were ranked as high-performing, meaning that they performed nearly as well as the nationally ranked hospitals.
These recent recognitions by U.S.News & World Report adds to that already received by UI Health Care from the magazine this year, including national rankings for the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the UI Children's Hospital.
