Research Week brings acclaimed researchers and poster competition

The Carver College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and VA Health System Research Week will begin Tuesday, April 22, and runs through Thursday, April 24 on the health sciences campus of The University of Iowa. The 2014 event will focus on “Diabetes: Mechanisms and Treatment.”
Following the week’s theme, three nationally and internationally known researchers will present keynote lectures throughout the week. The presenters and the time of their lectures are as follows:
Eva Feldman, MD, PhD, will present her talk, “Metabolic Neuropathy and Cardiovascular Disease: The Chicken or the Egg?” on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110 MERF). At the University of Michigan, Feldman is the Russell N. DeJong Professor of Neurology, director of the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute, and director of the Program for Neurology Research and Discovery.
Jens Bruening, MD, is the head of the Department of Mouse Genetics and Metabolism and the director of the Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research at the University of Cologne in Germany. His talk, “Neuronal Control of Metabolism” will be presented on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110 MERF).
Morris Birnbaum, MD, PhD, the Willard and Rhoda Ware Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic Disease Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania, will present his talk, “The Regulation of Metabolism by Insulin and Glucagon” on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110 MERF).
The week will have two separate poster sessions, one for students and one for postdoctoral fellows and staff, which will both take place at 1:00 p.m. in the MERF Atrium. The competition for students will take place Tuesday, April 22 and the competition for postdoctoral fellows and staff will take place Wednesday, April 23. Posters will be judged between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The awards reception, which will include the announcement of poster sessions winners, will take place Thursday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the MERF Atrium.
