Ride 4 Youth
Tuesday, March 19, 2013
The Boulware Learning Community and the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) will be a hosting the first annual Ride 4 Youth charity bike ride on April 21st to benefit the United Action for Youth (UAY). The event is additionally supported by Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT), Hy-Vee, State Farm and Panera.
The UAY is a local, non-profit, community-based service agency that offers a wide variety of youth services including youth development, counseling, crisis intervention, skill-building, creative activities, and other support services to youth and families in Johnson County and surrounding communities. The UAY provides services to over 2,600 individuals annually in order to further its vision of young people and adults working together to create a stronger community.
The ride will start at the Hawkeye Recreation Fields parking lot at the intersection of Melrose Ave. and Mormon Trek Blvd. in Iowa City. There are three route distances available 18 miles, 40 miles, and 64 miles. Rider accommodations along the route will include rest stops with food, drinks, music, bathrooms and more as well as SAG wagons to pick up riders who are unable to bike the complete distance.
Riders may begin their ride any time between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on April 21st. However, rest stops and other amenities will shut-down at 4:00 p.m. so riders should plan their start time in accordance with their choice of route distance.
In addition to riders, Ride 4 Youth is also in need of volunteers to assist in supporting the ride. Event organizers are currently in need of volunteers to answer questions and hand out food and water at rest stops and monitor the course throughout the day. Finally, organizers are looking for musicians to play at the course rest stops.
Before April 8th, registration is $25 for students and $35 for non-students. After April 8th, registration fees will increase to $30 for students and $35 for non-students with registration open until the day of the ride. Racers will receive a t-shirt and information goody bag on the day of the event as well as food and drink along the ride. Click here to register as a rider or a volunteer at this year’s Ride 4 Youth.
