Residency specialty: Ophthalmology

Why did you choose the Carver College of Medicine?

The people. Every one is exceptionally nice and will go above and beyond to see these students succeed. I feel that I belong.

How have your educational experiences here prepared you for your future career?

Our educational exposures to the many specialties including a strong foundation in the primary care specialties is something that I think makes our school unique and our graduates well rounded physicians. In addition, the supportive, encouraging, and respectful environment set forth by the Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum on through the faculty, staff, residents and student colleagues is priceless.

Do you hope to stay in Iowa for your residency?

Of course!! I love it here. I may never leave.

Home town: Lake Mills, IA
Residency specialty: Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/Gyn)

Why did you choose the Carver College of Medicine?

The well organized and innovative curriculum backed by a great support system of faculty and staff. There was a real sense of teamwork and community here. They made it clear that not only would they help me become a competent physician, but they would introduce me to many other great opportunities in medicine.

How have your educational experiences here prepared you for your future career?

I've especially enjoyed the many opportunities offered in the realm of teaching. I've been a part of the Teaching Distinction Track and had lots of experience in a variety of teaching roles. An ability to teach effectively will serve me and my colleagues well in the future. I also spent a year as a pathology extern; an invaluable experience that introduced me to great friends and taught me skills to help even outside of a career in pathology.

Do you hope to stay in Iowa for your residency?

Absolutely! We love Iowa City, the university community and of course the Carver College of Medicine and the UI Hospital and Clinics—its a great place to learn and live.

Zeitler, Will

William Zeitler

Home town: Iowa City, IA
Residency specialty: I won't know until Match Day. It could be internal medicine, emergency medicine or an emergency medicine/internal medicine dual residency. I had all types of residencies ranked in my top five. My residency specialty will be as much of a surprise as where I will be living in July.

Why did you choose the Carver College of Medicine?

I chose to go to medical school here because of the opportunity to learn practical skills right from the start and the interest the faculty and staff showed for the students. It is also nice to be close to my family and I am lucky my parents live in the same town as the college.

How have your educational experiences here prepared you for your future career?

The opportunities I was given to teach have helped me learn more about working with patients and other aspects of medicine. The Carver College of Medicine gives medical students many opportunities to teach each other, which can be valuable. This is important for me when I head into residency and for my future working at an academic medical center.

Do you hope to stay in Iowa for your residency?

I would love to stay in Iowa but they didn't have a combined residency for internal medicine/emergency medicine, so I may be going somewhere else because of that. I would not be unhappy at all if I got to stay here though for either the internal medicine or emergency medicine programs.

Kristen Gerjevic

Home town: Council Bluffs, IA
Residency specialty: Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/Gyn)

Why did you choose the Carver College of Medicine?

It has an excellent reputation and is a great resource within the state of Iowa. I was impressed with how much they care about their students- offering counseling services, tutoring service, distinction tracks, etc. Very student-centric.

How have your educational experiences here prepared you for your future career?

The Carver College of Medicine not only offers great medical education, but it's the extras that have helped prepare for the career I want to have. I hope to stay in academic medicine as an educator. The Carver College of Medicine offers a teaching elective as well as a Teaching Track, which helped me hone my teaching and collaboration skills. Additionally, the school is very cognizant of the diversity of patients and exposes the student to that diversity on a daily basis. I was also given the opportunity to go abroad during medical school, which has inspired me to continue medical trips abroad in my future practice.

Do you hope to stay in Iowa for your residency?

Training at Iowa would be great- it is a very strong program with excellent people. However, if I do end up at another institution, I am confident that I will be able to acclimate quickly due to the skills I've acquired during medical school at the Carver College of Medicine.
