The University of Iowa Diagnostic Laboratories is in the process of launching a web based connectivity solution for outreach clients to place orders and view results electronically. Two clients, McFarland Clinic in Ames and Dr. Calarge (a UIHC researcher), recently performed beta testing of ATLAS LabWorks for the UIDL. The beta testing was completed successfully, and the UIDL is now moving forward with a general offering of this functionality to its client base.
Phase I of the project provides UIDL clients with a web portal to enter lab orders into that transmit directly to the UIHC Laboratory Information System (LIS), with results transmitting back in real time. Phase II of implementation, to begin in 2014, involves a direct interface being built between the ordering client and the UIDL. Phase II affords an ATLAS client not only the ability to send orders and receive results electronically, but to do so directly to and from the client’s own LIS or Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
The launch of ATLAS LabWorks is the cornerstone of a broad initiative by the UIDL to compete on a much larger scale in the reference laboratory market; bringing technology and laboratory medicine together to improve client satisfaction and enhance patient care.
