Research and Clinical Environment

The research enterprise of the UI Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) garnered $193.9 million in external funding in 2008 and the UI ranks 12th among public institutions in NIH funding. The enterprise is overseen by two senior associate deans for research: Michael Apicella, M.D., Interim Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs and Gary Hunninghake, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Sciences. S. Ramaswamy, Ph.D., is Director of the CCOM's core research facilities.
Researchers in the CCOM's 240 laboratories are served by state-of-the-art core research facilities and research support facilities. Much of the research conducted at the CCOM is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs.
Many CCOM faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Four faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 16 are members of the Institute of Medicine and three are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
The CCOM is home to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of 39 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation; the Senator Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center, one of six such NIH-funded centers in the nation; the Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration and the newly established Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
