The Carver College of Medicine Diversity Physician Shadowing Program
Mission
To make shadowing opportunities more accessible to undergraduates from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds exploring careers in medicine.
The program will provide a guarantee of two half day shadow experiences per semester. Potential for more experiences will be based on demand and physician availability. During spring 2013 semester, participating physicians will be from the Department of Internal Medicine (and subspecialities) and the Department of Family Medicine.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
- Be a currently enrolled student at the University of Iowa
- Attend Professionalism Training with Dr. Denise Martinez, Assistant Dean, Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives
- Complete mandatory HIPAA compliance training and health paperwork prior to shadowing
Preference will be given to students who:
- Identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine
- Come from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
- Have demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations and health disparitities
- Are members of the University of Iowa MAPS Chapter (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students)
You will be required by the end of the semester to submit through this site a brief summary of your experience, what you learned, how you have benefitted and feedback on the program.
Once your on-line application is submitted, you will be notified of your application status within three weeks. The mandatory training and paperwork completion date is Wednesday, February 13 from 5:00-6:30pm in MERF 1117. Deadline for applications is Friday, February 8, 2013.
