  • The Carver College of Medicine Diversity Physician Shadowing Program


    To make shadowing opportunities more accessible to undergraduates from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds exploring careers in medicine.

    The program will provide one half day shadow experience per semester.  During each semester, participating physicians will be from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine (and subspecialties), the Department of Otolaryngology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiology, and the Department of Ophthalmology.

    Basic Eligibility Requirements

    • Minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Be a currently enrolled student at the University of Iowa
    • Attend Professionalism Training with Dr. Denise Martinez, Assistant Dean, Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives
    • Complete mandatory HIPAA compliance training and health paperwork prior to shadowing

    Preference will be given to students who:

    • Identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine
    • Come from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
    • Have demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations and health disparities  
    • Are members of the University of Iowa MAPS Chapter (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students)

    You will be required by the end of the semester to submit through this site a brief summary of your experience, what you learned, how you have benefitted and feedback on the program.

    Once your on-line application is submitted, you will be notified of your application status by June 12. 

    Dates & Deadlines:

    June 10 - Shadowing applications due.  You will be notified of your acceptance to the program by June 12.

    June 15 - MANDATORY Professionalism and HIPAA training - 5:30pm MERF 1135.  Training is required unless you attended in the fall or spring.  Training is required once per academic year.

    June 22 - August 14 - Physician Shadowing experiences
