  • The Carver College of Medicine Diversity Physician Shadowing Program


    To make shadowing opportunities more accessible to undergraduates from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds exploring careers in medicine.

    The program will provide one half day shadow experience per semester.  During summer 2014 semester, participating physicians will be from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine (and subspecialities), the Department of Otolarygnology.

     Basic Eligibility Requirements

    • Minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Be a currently enrolled student at the University of Iowa
    • Attend Professionalism Training with Dr. Denise Martinez, Assistant Dean, Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives
    • Complete mandatory HIPAA compliance training and health paperwork prior to shadowing

    Preference will be given to students who:

    • Identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine
    • Come from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
    • Have demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations and health disparities  
    • Are members of the University of Iowa MAPS Chapter (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students)

    You will be required by the end of the semester to submit through this site a brief summary of your experience, what you learned, how you have benefitted and feedback on the program.

    Once your on-line application is submitted, you will be notified of your application status by June 10. 

    Dates & Deadlines:

    June 5 - Shadowing applications due.  You will be notified of your acceptance to the program by June 10

    June 17 - MANDATORY Professionalism and HIPAA training, 5:30-7:30pm in MERF 2166 unless you attended in fall 2013 or spring 2014

    June 18 - Alternative Professionalism and HIPAA training, 9:00-10:30am in MERF 1121

    June 25 - August 7 - Physician Shadowing experiences

    August 20 - Evaluations due
