As Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Iowa from 1998 to 2010, he built from the ground up a vibrant academic unit that excels in research, patient care, and medical education and that has advanced a number of innovative models of health care delivery. As the current director of the University of Iowa’s Institute for Clinical Translational Science, Dr. Rosenthal has led efforts to enhance clinical research capabilities, develop community-based practice networks and multi-institutional clinical data networks, and train the next generation of clinical investigators. He is the author of over 160 publications of original research, including a number of insightful studies on health care quality.
Dr. Rosenthal has received research funding from a number of public agencies (NIH, VA, AHRQ, HRSA, and the Ohio and Iowa Departments of Health) and private entities (Commonwealth Fund, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Donald W. Reynolds Foundation). On the national level, his work has helped shape health policy. As a former President of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine, and as the current Chair of the SGIM Research Health Policy Committee, he has worked tirelessly to advance national agendas in practice redesign, primary care training, and funding for patient-centered outcomes research.
Dr. Karl Thomas, Executive Chair and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Internal Medicine, will be working with Dr. Rosenthal during this interim period with several new initiatives to align funding, staffing, and clinical support for faculty across the department. He will work very closely with the division directors in this role, with the goal of strengthening the department’s finances and clinical programs for the new incoming Chair/DEO.
Together, Drs. Rosenthal and Thomas will ensure that the UI Department of Internal Medicine continues to provide stellar patient care, resident and fellow education, and research.
