    Medical School Admission Committee
    Katie White, MD was recently recognized for contributing 88 hours to the Medical School Admissions Committee. Please join us in thanking Katie for her dedication to this committee.

    2016 ICRU Distinguished Mentor Award
    Helena Laroche, MD was nominated for the 2016 ICRU Distinguished Mentor Award by one of her students. The ICRU Distinguished Mentor Award was created to recognize faculty for providing outstanding mentoring of undergraduate students in research and creative projects.

    Rising Star Chapter
    The Iowa Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) was awarded the Rising Star Award by the Society of Hospital Medicine in recognition of the chapter’s innovation and growth in 2015. During 2015, the chapter organized and held its first-ever scientific meeting, which included an RIV competition. The chapter also demonstrated an increase in outreach to family medicine and pediatrics hospitalists and trainees with an interest in hospital medicine.

    VA QUERI Program
    The VA QUERI Program has selected Eli Perencevich, MD to serve as a Program Director on the “Combating Antimicrobial Resistance through Rapid Implementation of Available Guidelines and Evidence (CARRIAGE)” project. The program is a VA-wide initiative to support QI interventions. The project will address concern surrounding antimicrobial resistance by looking at the improved use of antibiotics and ways to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in the VA patient care setting.

    Leader in Healthcare Equality
    UI Health Care has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation for meeting non-discrimination and training criteria and demonstrating a commitment to equal and comprehensive care for LGBT patients. The UI LGBTQ Clinic is staffed by Nicole Nisly, MD and Katie Imborek, MD.

    You Make a Difference Award
    Jerilyn Lundberg, MD recently received a You Make a Difference award. Dr. Lundberg was nominated by her patient for her caring demeanor and willingness to go above and beyond for her patient. Congratulations, Jerilyn!

    UIHC Graduate Medical Education Innovation Funding
    Zach Smith, MD and Marcy Rosenbaum, MD will receive funding from the UIHC Graduate Medical Education Innovation Committee for their proposal, “Working at Night: Nocturnists Observing Resident-led New Patient Encounters”. Zach and Marcy will utilize this funding to identify ways to improve the direct observation of learners.

    Early Discharge Intervention on the Carvers (EDIC)

    Kevin Glenn, MD and members of the Hospitalist Program have focused on increasing the rate at which patients are discharged before 11 am and 3 pm. The team developed a pilot that resulted in an overall improvement in the time of discharge on 4RC and 6RC. The outcome? The early discharge rate on 4RC and 6RC improved from 5% to 21% and Press-Ganey scores increased from the 1st percentile to the 98th percentile.

    Heather Reisinger and Samantha Solimeo Assume Leadership Roles
    Heather Schacht Reisinger, PhD has been named Associate Director for Research for the VA Center for Comprehensive Access & Deliver Research and Evaluation (CADRE). Heather will provide scientific direction fostering the CADRE research focus areas, recruit Center investigators and scientific personnel, provide leadership in advancing health services research, oversee faculty and integrate them into projects that will enhance their productivity and professional growth, and provide leadership to CADRE investigators in identifying and conducting operations versus research work. In addition, Heather will co-chair the CADRE Leadership Advisory Committee, and work collaboratively with the Associate Director for Operations, Bonnie BootsMiller, PhD, to supervise the CADRE Cores.

    Samantha Solimeo, PhD has been named Director of the Ethnographic Methods and Implementation Core (EMIC) in the VA Center for Comprehensive Access & Deliver Research and Evaluation (CADRE). The EMIC is comprised of investigators, analysts, coordinators, transcribers, and a program manager all of whom have particular expertise in qualitative research theory and methodology. The Core provides scientific & qualitative leadership and technical services for VA research and quality improvement projects, as well as VA-affiliated faculty at the University of Iowa. EMIC investigators have expertise in mixed and multi-method health services and clinical applications of ethnographic research and design, implementation science, program evaluation, human factors, and public health.

    Katie White Receives 2015 Outstanding Educator Award
    Katie White, MD recently received the 2015 Outstanding Educator Award from the Carver College of Medicine for her significant contributions to medical education and her willingness to go above and beyond her educational requirements. Dr. White was nominated by Dr. Rosenthal and Dr. Szot.

    Hospitalist Program receives Certificate of Excellence
    The Hospitalist Program, under the direction of Kevin Glenn, MD, received the Certificate of Excellence from Theresa Brennan, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The Program received the certificate in recognition of their high standards of excellence in Leveraging Teamwork to Improve Patient Care.

    Zach Smith Recognized at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
    Zach Smith, MD was recently recognized at an Internal Medicine Grand Rounds for his work in introducing medical students and residents to inpatient medicine teams in an exemplary fashion. Congratulations, Zach!

    Promotions
    Three members of our Division were promoted effective July 1, 2015. Dale Bieber, MD and Todd Wiblin, MD were promoted to Full Professor and Katie Harris, MD was promoted to Associate Professor.

    LGBTQ Clinic Receives 2015 UIP Innovations in Clinical Care Award
    The LGBTQ Clinic, under the direction of Nicole Nisly, MD and Katie Imborek, MD, was the recipient of the 2015 Innovations in Clinic Care Award from the University of Iowa Physicians. The award recognizes an individual or team for the implementation of an innovative process or program aimed at improving patient care for the underserved and largely under-recognized population. The clinic received national recognition as the Equality Leader in both 2013 and 2014 by the Human Rights Campaign Health Equality Index. The providers have seen over 200 unique LGBTQ identified patients since the clinics opening, with nearly 75% of the patient population living outside of Johnson County.

    Department’s Quality and Safety Group Receives 2015 Excellence in Quality Award
    The Department’s Quality and Safety Group, comprised of Karl Thomas, MD, Krista Johnson, MD, Michele Fang, MD, Melinda Johnson, MD, Ethan Kuperman, MD, and Mony Fraer, MD, received the Excellence in Quality Award from the University of Iowa Physicians (UIP) for their work to improve patient care both at UIHC and throughout the world.

    Amy Letich, ARNP Receives 3rd Place for Anemia Management Clinic Poster
    Amy Leitch, ARNP recently presented “Anemia Management in the Pre-Surgical Period, through an Anemia Management Clinic” at the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. Please see the attached abstract for her work that received 3rd place.

    Karen Malkhasyan Receives 1st Place Poster Award at the Iowa Chapter SHM Meeting
    Karen Malkhasyan, MD recently received the winning poster at the academic meeting of the Iowa Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine on October 17, 2015 for his work entitled, “The Performance of the Rothman Index in the Prediction of In-Hospital Cardio-Pulmonary Arrest in Adults”. The award also grants Dr. Malkhasyan automatic acceptance to the Society of Hospital Medicine’s 2016 Conference RIV Poster Competition, which will occur March 6-9, 2016 in San Diego, CA.

    Eli Perencevich Elected to SHEA Treasurer
    Eli Perencevich, MD was recently elected to serve as the Treasurer for the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of American (SHEA) by the SHEA Board of Trustees.

    Prevention Epicenter Award
    Eli Perencevich, MD recently received a $2.2 million Prevention Epicenter award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eli and his team, which includes extensive contributions from Heather Reisinger, PhD and Marin Schweizer, PhD, will develop and test interventions to prevent dangerous pathogens including Ebola, MRSA, and Clostridium difficile from spreading in hospitals.     Heather Reisinger Receives UI/IWLC Scholarship
    Heather Reisinger recently received a scholarship from the University of Iowa to attend the 2015 Iowa Women Lead Change Conference in Des Moines. Heather’s application was selected due to her commitment to leadership development and her intentions to apply learning from the conference to her current role.

    Consent Research and Notice of Proposed Rule Making
    Chris Simon recently received notification that the OHRP was citing his research in the Notice of Proposed Rule Making related to informed consent for Biospecimen research. Chris’ work demonstrates that participants are willing to have their specimens used in research if they are notified that the research might occur.

    Yolanda Villalvazo Named Clinical Director for VA Hepatitis C Clinic
    Yolanda Villalvazo has recently been named the Clinical Director for the VA Hepatitis C Clinic. The appointment coincides with the recent completion of her General Medicine Fellowship and VA Quality Scholars Program.

    Vicki Kijewski Named Faculty Teacher of the Year

    Vicki Kijewski was recently named “Faculty Teacher of the Year” by the Internal Medicine Residents.

    Ethan Kuperman Named Institutional Champion

    Ethan Kuperman was named the University of Iowa Institutional Champion at the 2015 Midwest Region Society of General Internal Medicine Meeting.

    Wendy Fiordellisi Receives François M. Abboud Internal Medicine Resident Award
    Wendy Fiordellisi was the recipient of the 2014-2015 François M. Abboud Internal Medicine Resident Award for her recent poster that was accepted to the Society of General Internal Medicine National Meeting. Wendy had the opportunity to present her work titled, “Improving Accuracy and Efficiency of the Medication Reconciliation Process at Internal Medicine Outpatient Appointments”, at this year’s national meeting in Toronto.

    Chakradhari Inampudi Accepted into MSCI Program
    Chakradhari Inampudi has been accepted into the MS in Clinical Investigation Program. He will join colleagues Asad Ali, Jae Dong, Yassar Nabeel, Ahmed Selim, and Umang Swami in the program this fall.

    Musab Hommos Receives Best-Poster Award at 3rd Annual QI Symposium
    Musab Hommos was this year’s recipient of the Best-Poster Award at the 3rd Annual QI Symposium held April 15th-16th. Musab won this award for his poster, “A Novel Discharge Summary Evaluation Instrument”, which was in collaboration with Aparna Kamath, Clarence Kreiter, and Ethan Kuperman. Congratulations, Musab!

    Kevin Glenn Named an IOWA Award Winner
    Kevin Glenn, MD was awarded the IOWA Award for his work with the Transitional Care Program Team in the restructuring and development of the transitional care model. This award is given to University of Iowa employees who have made a positive difference in the workplace. Congratulations Kevin!

    Quality Improvement Symposium
    Please join us in congratulating Aparna Kamath and Krista Johnson for their work on another successful Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Symposium. Aparna served as the Course Director while Krista served as a Course Co-Director at this year’s symposium titled, “The Quest for Value”.

    Department of Internal Medicine Research Day Awards
    Marin Schweizer received the Best Clinical/Translational Poster Award at the 2015 Department of Internal Medicine Research Day for her position on “A Multicenter Intervention to Reduce Surgical Site Infections among Patients Undergoing Cardiac Operations and Total Joint Arthroplasty (STOP SSI Study)”. Congratulations Marin!

    Collegiate Teaching Award

    M3 Outpatient Clerkship Director

    Katie White, MD has been named the M3 Clerkship Director for the Department of Internal Medicine effective February 1, 2015. In addition to her new role, Dr. White will continue to providing patient care in our IRL Internal Medicine Clinic as well as the VA Continuity of Care Clinic. Congratulations to Katie on her new role!
