    Yolanda Villalvazo Named Clinical Director for VA Hepatitis C Clinic
    Yolanda Villalvazo has recently been named the Clinical Director for the VA Hepatitis C Clinic. The appointment coincides with the recent completion of her General Medicine Fellowship and VA Quality Scholars Program.

    Vicki Kijewski Named Faculty Teacher of the Year

    Vicki Kijewski was recently named “Faculty Teacher of the Year” by the Internal Medicine Residents.

    Aparna Kamath and Joe Szot Receive Certificate of Excellence
    Aparna Kamath and Joe Szot received the Certificate of Excellence form the Iowa City VA Health Care Center

    Ethan Kuperman Named Institutional Champion

    Ethan Kuperman was named the University of Iowa Institutional Champion at the 2015 Midwest Region Society of General Internal Medicine Meeting.

    Wendy Fiordellisi Receives François M. Abboud Internal Medicine Resident Award
    Wendy Fiordellisi was the recipient of the 2014-2015 François M. Abboud Internal Medicine Resident Award for her recent poster that was accepted to the Society of General Internal Medicine National Meeting. Wendy had the opportunity to present her work titled, “Improving Accuracy and Efficiency of the Medication Reconciliation Process at Internal Medicine Outpatient Appointments”, at this year’s national meeting in Toronto.

    Chakradhari Inampudi Accepted into MSCI Program
    Chakradhari Inampudi has been accepted into the MS in Clinical Investigation Program. He will join colleagues Asad Ali, Jae Dong, Yassar Nabeel, Ahmed Selim, and Umang Swami in the program this fall.

    Musab Hommos Receives Best-Poster Award at 3rd Annual QI Symposium
    Musab Hommos was this year’s recipient of the Best-Poster Award at the 3rd Annual QI Symposium held April 15th-16th. Musab won this award for his poster, “A Novel Discharge Summary Evaluation Instrument”, which was in collaboration with Aparna Kamath, Clarence Kreiter, and Ethan Kuperman. Congratulations, Musab!

    Kevin Glenn Named an IOWA Award Winner
    Kevin Glenn, MD was awarded the IOWA Award for his work with the Transitional Care Program Team in the restructuring and development of the transitional care model. This award is given to University of Iowa employees who have made a positive difference in the workplace. Congratulations Kevin!

    Quality Improvement Symposium
    Please join us in congratulating Aparna Kamath and Krista Johnson for their work on another successful Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Symposium. Aparna served as the Course Director while Krista served as a Course Co-Director at this year’s symposium titled, “The Quest for Value”.

    Workshops at the 38th Annual Meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine
    The Division of General Internal Medicine was well represented at this year’s Annual Meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine, held this past week in Toronto, with 7 faculty members participating in 3 separate workshops:

    • Chaitanya Are, Wendy Fiordellisi, Krista Johnson, Aparna Kamath, and Justin Smock, in collaboration with several nurses from 6 Roy Carver, presented their workshop, “Simulation for Multidisciplinary Teamwork and Communication”
    • Michele Fang, in collaboration with national colleagues, presented, “Write it for FORUM! Experience + Collaboration = Career Development”
    • Heather Reisinger and Samantha Solimeo collaborated with their VA colleagues to present, “Qualitative Methods in Implementation Research: Examples from VA”

    Umang Swami Accepted into MS in Clinical Investigation Program
    Umang Swami will join 4 of his peers (Asad Ali, Jae Dong, Yassar Nabeel, and Ahmed Selim) in the Clinical Investigation Program this fall. Please join us in congratulating Umang on his acceptance.

    Several division members presented posters at this year’s Annual Meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine:

    • Wendy Fiordellisi, Chris Goerdt, Cheryl Alberhasky, Sue Behrle, and Krista Johnson presented “Improving the Accuracy and Efficiency of the Medication Reconciliation Process at Internal Medicine Outpatient Appointments”
    • Rich Hoffman, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of New Mexico, presented “Primary Care Providers in New Mexico Are Concerned about Implementing Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening” and “Treatment Patterns for Older Veterans with Localized Prostate Cancer”
    • David Katz, Kenda Stewart, Monica Paez, John Holman, Mark Vander Weg, and Gary Gaeth presented “Veterans’ Preferences for Smoking Cessation Treatment”

    Department of Internal Medicine Research Day Awards
    Marin Schweizer received the Best Clinical/Translational Poster Award at the 2015 Department of Internal Medicine Research Day for her position on “A Multicenter Intervention to Reduce Surgical Site Infections among Patients Undergoing Cardiac Operations and Total Joint Arthroplasty (STOP SSI Study)”. Congratulations Marin!

    Hilary Mosher Receives VA Recognition for Work on Opioid Use
    The VA Office of Research & Development recently highlighted Hilary Mosher’s JGIM article on opioid use. Please see the VA’s announcement as well as her recent article in JGIM.

    The Division of General Internal Medicine will be well represented at this year’s SGIM National Meeting in Toronto.

    • Krista Johnson, Aparna Kamath, Chaitanya Are, Justin Smock, Wendy Fiordellisi, Beth Lesh, Jen Wittman, Marcia Gingerich, and Emily Zirkelbach will present their workshop “Simulation for Multidisciplinary Teamwork and Communication” in the Quality of Care/Patient Safety workshop session.
    • Michele Fang will present “Write It for FORUM! Experience + Collaboration = Career Development!” during the Personal/Professional Development workshop session.

    Collegiate Teaching Award
    Joe Szot, MD received the Collegiate Teaching Award from the Carver College of Medicine. The College of Medicine grants this award to faculty members who are exceptional teachers in their area of specialty. Please join us in congratulating Joe on his achievement.

    M3 Outpatient Clerkship Director

    Katie White, MD has been named the M3 Clerkship Director for the Department of Internal Medicine effective February 1, 2015. In addition to her new role, Dr. White will continue to providing patient care in our IRL Internal Medicine Clinic as well as the VA Continuity of Care Clinic. Congratulations to Katie on her new role!
