Transplant research group awarded Scientist Scholarship Grant

Anthony Swatek, MD, a second year surgery resident has recently been awarded an American Society of Transplant Surgeons Scientist Scholarship Grant. The award supports full-time basic and translational laboratory research in the field of transplantation and immunobiology in the laboratory of a Society member.

Swatek is a member of a collaborative research group studying chronic rejection in lung transplantation and also working toward the development of an animal model for both chronic rejection as well as cystic fibrosis. The group includes Kal Parekh, MD, associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery and John Engelhardt, PhD, professor and chair of anatomy and cell biology.

The grant will be formally presented to the group during the 2014 World Transplant Conference in San Francisco, California in late July.
