Ben Darbro
A funny thing happened on the way to medical school
"My medical education has been great here at
the University of Iowa. I have been more than prepared to go into
clinics. We get exposed to patients early on in our medical education
and the administration is extremely supportive and understanding
of students."
Ben Darbro's journey to the University of Iowa happened by accident,
although he says it turned out to be a good one.
"The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine got put
on my AMCAS test by accident. My girlfriend heard it was a good
school and put it on there for me. I didn't even know she had done
it until I got a secondary application."
That was almost four years ago, and Darbro is very happy with
the decision he made to receive his medical education at the UI.
He feels the caring staff, outstanding medical education and just
the state itself are all reasons he's enjoyed the UI so much.
"My medical education has been great here at the University
of Iowa. I have been more than prepared to go into clinics. We
get exposed to patients early on in our medical education and the
administration is extremely supportive and understanding of students.
Iowa is also a great place to live. The people are so friendly
and considerate, and I like the fact that you get to experience
all four seasons here!"
Alumni are also a part of what makes the University of Iowa Carver
College of Medicine such a great medical institution. However,
Darbro feels alumni can contribute so much more than just money.
"I think the best way alumni can give back and be involved
in our medical education, especially for MSTP students is to share
their experiences as to what they do within their career. Many
MSTP students wonder for a long time what they're going to do when
they graduate from medical school, and it would be useful to know
that there are careers paths for us in industry and not just academia.
Sharing your experiences and providing your knowledge is one of
the greatest things you can give back to your alma mater."
